NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Ladyjack tennis team dropped three matches over the weekend in South Texas, falling to UTPA in non-conference action and to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and UTSA in league play.
Alina Shazkho and Roxana Enica continued to play well together in doubles play, SFA (3-13, 2-5 SLC), winning all three of their No. 1 doubles matches to improve their record to 12-4 overall on the season and to 6-1 against SLC doubles tandems.
Unfortunately each of the other doubles teams for the Ladyjacks were unable to pick up a win on the week, as SFA did not capture a doubles point in any of the three matches.
Shazkho and Enica disposed of UTPA's Stephanie Willerding and Reeta Raty (8-2) in Wednesday's match with the Broncs, but UTPA was able to capture the doubles point and shorten the match by reaching the fourth point of the match with wins in No. 2, No. 4, and No. 6 singles play.
The Ladyjacks just missed out on a win on Saturday at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, falling 4-3 to the Islanders. Shazkho and Enica took an 8-6 win over Mirnda Cicak and Nadia Filmalter, but TAMUCC took the other two doubles matches to steal the point. Shazkho also tallied a win over Cicak in No. 1 singles (6-3, 6-2), while Enica knocked off Nina Ciric (6-4, 6-0) for a win in No. 2 singles. Gabriela Gadeva scored another singles point for the Ladyjacks as well, defeating Alexandra Dyckman (6-3, 4-6, 10-7) in No. 4 singles.
Sunday's match also proved to be a difficult one for the Ladyjacks as UTSA ran its league record to 7-2 with a 7-0 win over SFA. Enica and Shazkho once again took their No. 1 doubles match, defeating Karen Scida and Micaela Silva (8-7 (8-6)), but that was all SFA could muster against the `Runners.
UTSA got pushed to tiebreakers in both No. 1 and No. 2 singles by Shazkho and Enica, with Enica nearly taking down Nathalie Wallin, eventually falling 6-7 (5-7), 6-2, 10-8.
The Ladyjacks next play on April 8 when they make up a rescheduled match with Sam Houston in Huntsville. The next time SFA will be at home is on April 10 when they host Oklahoma Christian at the Schlief Tennis Complex.
