NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Big plays were the order of the day in the Lumberjacks' first scrimmage as the offense picked up where it left off last season. Junior quarterback Jeremy Moses appeared to be in midseason form completing 19-of-24 (.792) passes for 367 yards and four touchdowns. All three SFA quarterbacks looked strong in the pocket attempting a total of 76 passes without an interception.
The 'Jacks' first-team offense finished the day gaining more than 400 yards of total offense, and recorded five touchdowns. The offense also struck for 10 plays of at least 25 yards on the day.
Fans didn't have to wait very long for the first offensive explosion. Moses connected with senior Contrevious Parks for a 70-yard scoring strike on the third play of the day. The offense followed that up with a 65-yard pass from Moses to senior Duane Brooks.
"I'm very excited about this team," said SFA head coach J.C. Harper. "This scrimmage was exciting to watch, but all of our practices leading up this have been exciting. They bring a solid work ethic to the field everyday, and I think our offseason program has really help prepare us for spring practice. I like the direction of this team."
The SFA ground game also supplied its share of big moments recording four rushes of eight yards or more, including a 30-yard burst from junior Vincent Pervis. SFA also rushed for a touchdown early on in the scrimmage.
Along with Moses, who connected on his first five pass attempts, sophomore Dalton Williams and Whitehouse freshman Brady Attaway were able to move the football when their numbers were called. Williams finished the day 21-of-36 (.583) for 194 yards, while Attaway was 7-of-16 (.438) for 87 yards. Attaway struggled early completing only one of his first five, but rallied to close the scrimmage completing four of his final seven passes, including completions of 21 and 25 yards.
"This is the first time in a while that we have entered spring camp with a veteran quarterback," said Harper. "Jeremy (Moses) is doing a great job of distributing the ball to our playmakers, and our playmakers are doing a great job of getting the ball up the field. Our offense is really executing the plays."
"I'm also really impressed with our offensive line. The difference from this time last year until now is tremendous. They are doing a great job of up front," added Harper.
Sophomore Taylor Lokey hauled in a team-high seven passes for 95 yards and a touchdown. Classmate Brandon Scott added six catches for 84 yards, while Parks finished the day with two receptions for 77 yards, and a score. He also added a six-yard carry for a touchdown. Sophomore Garret Williams caught five passes for 76 yards. Junior Vincent Pervis was strong out of the Lumberjack backfield recording four carries for 49 yards (12.3 ypc). He also hauled in two passes for eight yards and a touchdown.
The Lumberjack defense was led by senior Cory Barlow and sophomore Jarred Hill. Barlow recorded six tackles, including three solo stops, while Hill posted eight stops, and three solo tackles. He was also credited with a pass break up. Returning All-American defensive end Tim Knicky finished the day with five tackles, including three for losses, and two sacks.
