NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Senior forward Matt Kingsley has been named honorable mention All-America announced the Associated Press Monday afternoon. The 2009 Southland Conference Player of the Year, Kingsley finished fifth in the league in scoring (15.8 ppg), rebounding (7.7 rpg) and field goal percentage (54.8 percent) while leading the 'Jacks to their second consecutive Southland Conference regular-season title.
"I'm so happy for Matt, and very proud of what he has accomplished here at SFA," said head coach Danny Kaspar. "He has worked very hard over the last several years to become an outstanding player. He is very deserving of this honor."
A three-time All-Southland Conference selection, Kingsley was named the 2009 SLC Tournament Most Valuable Player, and guided the Lumberjacks to their first-ever berth in the NCAA Championships. The 'Jacks posted an 82-40 (.672) record during Kingsley's four seasons on campus.
Kingsley will graduate as one of the all-time greats in program history. He concluded his career as the school's all-time leader in field goals, free throws, blocked shots and games played, and ranks second all-time in points, rebounds and games started.
It is the second consecutive season that SFA has placed an athlete on the AP All-America team. Kingsley follows in the footsteps of Josh Alexander who was named 2008 SLC Player of the Year and an AP honorable mention All-America selection.
"This is a great tribute to our program," said Kaspar. "I feel it is an even greater honor knowing that it is two different players that have earned the recognition. Josh and Matt have brought a lot of recognition to not only our campus, but to the community as well. They are not only great ballplayers, but men of high character who have also succeeded in the classroom. Matt has already graduated and is working on his masters degree, and Josh in scheduled to graduate in May."
