FRISCO, Texas - Junior guard Whitney Cormier has been named first-team All-Southland Conference announced league officials Monday morning. It is the first time in her career that Cormier has been named to the all-conference team.
Cormier led the Ladyjacks in scoring (12.2 ppg), rebounding (5.8 rpg) and steals (2.0 spg) during her junior season, but really came on during the conference season. She finished fifth in the league in scoring (15.4 pg) and 14th in rebounding (6.4 pg) in conference only games. Cormier recorded three double-doubles, and reached the 20-point plateau four times on the season.
Cormier was named Southland Conference Player of the Week on Feb. 16, after posting one of the better performances of her career. Cormier netted a career-high 26 points, and pulled down eight rebounds in a win over Northwestern State. She followed that up with a 23-point performance against McNeese State, helping guide the Ladyjacks to a perfect 2-0 record during the week.
The fifth-seeded Ladyjacks open the 2009 State Farm Southland Conference Championships Wednesday against fourth-seeded Lamar. The game is slated to tip off at 8:30 p.m., from the Merrell Center in Katy, Texas. It marks the fourth consecutive season that the Ladyjacks have opened the tournament against Lamar. If the Ladyjacks advance to the semifinals, they will face the winner of the No. 1 Texas-Arlington versus No. 8 Texas A&M-Corpus Christi game.
