SFA Sweeps Team Titles at Dogwood Invitational

NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin men's and women's track and field team wrapped up the 2009 Dogwood Invitational Saturday afternoon at the Fletcher Garner Track, and swept the team competition. The `Jacks defeated Sam Houston State, 226.50 - 140, while the Ladyjacks recorded a 275 - 126 victory over SHSU. SFA recorded 11 more individual titles on the final day, and one NCAA regional qualifying mark.
Sophomore Megan Harlan recorded the Ladyjacks' first individual title of the day when she recorded a throw of 126-4 to win the women's javelin. She was part of an SFA 1-2 sweep in the event, as junior Tabitha Riley finished second overall (114-9). Sophomore Shabranttny Jolly was fourth in the event.
Sophomore Kaitlyn Andrews just missed an individual title in the women's shot put. She recorded a throw of 45-5.75 to finish second overall. The Ladyjacks placed four athletes in the top five of the women's high jump. Sophomores Ebbonye Johnson and Whitney Trimble both cleared a height of 5-5.00 to finish tied for second overall, while freshmen Monica Rosendall and Carrie Hahn finished tied for fourth with a mark of 5-3.00.
The SFA women were even more impressive in the long jump taking the top four spots. Junior Silent-Joy Egboba-Waye led an SFA sweep of the long jump as SFA took the top four spots. Egboba-Waye finished the day with a mark of 19-0.75 in the event. Egboba-Waye added another individual title in the women's 100-meter hurdles with her NCAA regional qualifying time of 13.88.
Freshman Makayla Elliott added to the Ladyjacks individual title count in the throws events with her victory in the discus. Elliott posted a throw of 147-4 to out-distance the competition by almost two feet. Andrews recorded a third-place finish in the event (138-9).
Freshman Jon Arthur just missed an individual title in the men's shot put. He finished second overall with a throw of 53-9.00. Sophomore Andrew Plentl finished tied for second in the men's high jump by clearing a height of 6-4.75. Junior Travis Beavers finished second overall in the men's 400-meter hurdles with his time of 53.30.
SFA kicked off the track events Saturday in strong fashion sweeping the 4X100-meter relay. The Ladyjacks won the event with a time of 46.94, while the SFA men clocked a time of 41.06 to finish first overall. The `Jacks also won the men's 4X400-meter relay with their time of 3:12.99. Freshman Ty Thomas and sophomore Sherman Rosborough posted the two fastest collegiate times of the day. Thomas won the 100 meters by crossing the finish line with a time of 11.06, while Rosborough was second with an 11.13. The duo returned to the track to record the two fastest collegiate times in the 200 meters. Thomas won the event with a time of 22.27, while Rosborough clocked a 22.31. Sophomore Frankey Nelson was third overall with a time of 22.42.
Freshman Danielle Burchette won the women's 800 meters with a time of 2:18.63. She was one of three Ladyjacks to finish in the top four. Sophomore Diona Finley finished third overall (2:29.04), while freshman Chantelle Mason was fourth (2:29.26). The Lumberjacks' lone senior Brian Wall helped SFA finish off the sweep in the 800 meters with his time of 1:52.97.
SFA returns to action Friday when they travel to Houston, Texas, to compete in the Rice Bayou Classic. The two-day event will run through Saturday.
