AUSTIN, Texas - Sophomore Monika Covington scattered five hits over seven innings, but Stephen F. Austin couldn't generate any offense in a 1-0 loss at Texas Friday night in the Time Warner Cable Texas Invitational.
SFA (0-2) was held to one hit for the second straight game, though the Ladyjacks threatened in the bottom of the sixth inning. Junior Karissa Jones got things started with a one-out single to center. Pinch-runner Candise Juarez moved into scoring position when Jessica Arana drew a walk. But the next batter, Monica Hirsch, went down on strikes, and Juarez was picked off to end the threat.
SFA's only other baserunner of the game came in the fifth, when Amber Price was hit by a pitch.
Texas' lone run came in the third inning. Desiree Williams reached on a fielder's choice, then stole second and third with two outs. She crossed the plate on a single to left field by Kacie Gaskin. The third was Texas' only multi-hit inning of the game.
Covington (0-1) added just one walk to the five hits she allowed and recorded five strikeouts.
The Ladyjacks will be back in action Saturday, when they continue tournament play with an 11 a.m. game against Florida State.
