MONTGOMERY, Texas - Super sophomore Kyle Robbins posted a two-over par, 74, Tuesday morning to finish tied for second overall at the 2009 SFA-Bill Hill Classic. The Lumberjacks carded a 298-303-311 - 912 as a team to finish second overall at the tournament.
"We are disappointed that we didn't win our tournament," said head coach Trey Schroeder. "The good thing is our short game is getting better, but we still struggle with some of our decision-making on the course. Par fives continue to be an area of concern for our team. We are playing over par on those holes as a team, and it is really hurting us."
Robbins was one of three 'Jacks to finish among the field's overall top six. After opening with a two-under 70, senior Chad Spencer recorded a 78 in the final two rounds to fall into a two-way tie for fourth. Junior Matt Oates recorded his strongest round of the tournament Tuesday recording a two-over 74, but Oates wasn't a part of the SFA team score because he was competing as an individual. The Diboll, native, recorded the lowest score of all the individuals.
Sophomore Michael Smith shot a three-round score of 78-74-76 - 228 to finish 12-over par for the tournament. He was eighth overall. Freshman Stetson McMillan was the final Lumberjack to score, but struggled in the final round. McMillan entered Tuesday's round only eight-over par, but struggled to close out the tournament with an 83. He was tied for 14th overall. Freshman Jordan Wynn carded a three-round score of 78-81-84 - 243, to finish 24th overall.
Sophomore Jacob Taylor finished 17th overall after shooting an 82-75-79 - 236. Freshman Matthew Collins finished tied for 21st after recording a score of 82-79-82 - 242. Freshman Jordan Wynn was 24th overall with a three-round score of 243, while junior Josh Irving was eight strokes back of Wynn. Irving finished the tournament 28th overall.
"We are still struggling in some areas," said Schroeder. "But I can see where we are improving as a team. They are fighting hard, and if they continue to do that we will continue to get better with every tournament."
The Lumberjacks will take a month off before returning to action Monday, Feb. 23, 2009, in the SLU Carter Plantation Intercollegiate. The two-day tournament will take place in Springfield, La.
