
`Jacks Second After Day One of Bill Hill Classic

MONTGOMERY, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack golf team recorded the second-lowest round of the day Monday morning in the 2009 SFA-Bill Hill Classic at the Walden Country Club on Lake Conroe in Montgomery, Texas. The `Jacks jumped out to an early lead with a 10-over par 298, but struggled in the second round with a 303 to finish the day second overall, nine strokes back of Oklahoma Christian (592).
Senior Chad Spencer led SFA with a six-over 78, and is currently third overall. Behind Spencer the Lumberjacks did a good job placing three others in the field's top seven. Sophomore Kyle Robbins finished the day with a five-over par 149, and is currently tied for fourth overall.
Sophomore Michael Smith recorded a 74-78 - 152 to finish tied for seventh overall, while freshman phenom Stetson McMillan finished the day with a 78-74 - 152. Another outstanding freshman for the Lumberjacks, Jordan Wynn, carded a 78-81 - 159 and is currently 20th overall.
The Lumberjacks also had four athletes competing on an individual basis Monday. Junior Matt Oates posted a 76-77 - 153, and is currently 10th overall. Sophomore Jacob Taylor enters Tuesday's final round tied for 15th overall. Taylor struggled in the opening round with an 82, but battled back in the second round with a three-over, 75.
Freshman Matthew Collins is tied for 22nd overall after shooting an 82-79 - 161. Junior Josh Irving will look to bounce back Tuesday after opening the Bill Hill Classic with an 89-85 - 174.
The Lumberjacks return to action Tuesday at 8 a.m., when they close out the 2009 SFA-Bill Hill Classic. The final round is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m.
