FRISCO, Texas - Sophomore punter Drew Nelson has been named Southland Conference Special Teams Player of the Week announced league officials Monday afternoon. It marks the second time this season that Nelson has received the honor.
Nelson was a key figure in the Lumberjacks' 19-10 victory over Northwestern State Saturday that helped SFA win a share of the Southland Conference title, and the right to bring Chief Caddo back to Nacogdoches. Nelson averaged 47 yards per punt in soggy conditions at Turpin Stadium in Natchitoches, La., which helped turn the field on the Demons in a very close game. Nelson downed one punt inside the 20-yard line, including a long punt of 50 yards.
The victory not only locked up a share of the 'Jacks first Southland Conference title since the 1999 season, and it also assured SFA of the league's automatic berth in the NCAA FCS playoffs. The 12th-ranked Lumberjacks will host No. 13 Eastern Washington Saturday from Homer Bryce Stadium. The first-round playoff game is slated to begin at 2 p.m.
