NACOGDOCHES, Texas - SFA junior Jordan Glynn laid in a missed tip-in with 1.1 seconds left to give SFA a 62-61 win over Jackson State Saturday in the William R. Johnson Coliseum. SFA trailed by five (61-56) with 1:46 to play, but scored the final six points of the game, with Glynn accounting for the last five. They were his only points of the contest.
The win evens SFA's record at 1-1 and keeps the `Jacks undefeated in home openers under 10th-year head coach Danny Kaspar. The Lumberjacks have now won 15 straight games in Johnson Coliseum dating to the home finale of the 2007-08 campaign.
Jackson State (0-3) led, 61-60, when Garrison Johnson missed the front end of a 1-and-1 opportunity. Sophomore center Jereal Scott cleared the rebound for SFA. After a Lumberjack timeout, SFA used nearly all of the remaining 32 seconds before working the ball down low to Glynn. He missed his first attempt, but junior guard Eddie Williams soared in for his seventh offensive rebound of the night. His tip-in attempt was too strong, but Glynn grabbed the loose ball and laid it in with 1.1 remaining to set the final margin.
Johnson got off a desperation 3-pointer at the other end, but it banged harmlessly off the backboard.
After six first-half lead changes, Jackson State took a 32-25 advantage to the locker room. The Tigers led by as many as 10 in the second period, and SFA didn't hold a second-half lead until Glynn's game-winner dropped through the cylinder.
Williams finished with a team-high 19 points on 9-of-15 shooting. He led all players with nine rebounds and tied for game-high honors with three assists in 39 minutes of action. Scott and senior guard Walt Harris joined Williams in double digits with 13 points apiece.
Garrison finished with 18 for the Tigers, who were led by 20 points from forward Tyrone Hanson. Hanson also hauled down six rebounds to tie with Cason Burk for the team lead.
SFA took its last lead of the first half with 9:19 to play, when Williams followed a Walt Harris jumper with one of his own to turn what had been a two-point Jackson State advantage into a 16-14 Lumberjack lead.
But the Tigers answered with a jumper by De'Suan Dixon at the other end to tie it, then took the lead on a jump shot by Hanson with 8:34 remaining. After an Eric Bell 3-pointer brought SFA to within three (26-23) with 3:14 to play, Jackson State scored six of the final eight points of the half to take a seven-point lead to the locker room. At the time it was the Tigers' largest advantage of the night.
Jackson State shot 69 percent from the floor in the opening frame, while holding SFA to 36 percent. The Tigers owned a 15-9 advantage on the boards in the first half. But the `Jacks outrebounded Jackson State, 22-7, in the second period and upped their shooting percentage to 52 percent after halftime to complete the comeback win.
The Tigers opened a 10-point lead (37-27) less than three minutes into the second half, but SFA answered with a 9-0 run over the next four minutes to close the gap to one with 13:08 to play. Scott contributed a jumper and a free throw, while Williams and Harris each got to the rim for layups, and junior forward Orren Tims sank a jumper in the paint to complete the run.
Jackson State quickly stretched the lead back to six with a layup and 3-pointer wrapped around an SFA turnover. Harris canned a three with 11:05 to play to make it a two-point game (42-40), but the Tigers again pushed their lead back out to six.
The lead was still six with 7:43 to play, when junior guard Austin Falke stuck a 3-pointer to pull SFA to within three points (52-49), but Jackson State answered again.
Johnson connected with 3:26 to play to give Jackson State a 59-54 lead. Williams tipped home a missed SFA shot two possessions later to make it a three-point game with 1:50 on the clock. Johnson knocked down a pair of foul shots at the other end to keep the margin at five, but the Tigers would not score again.
Scott hit the first of two free throws following Johnson's pair, then Glynn grabbed the rebound off Scott's miss on the second. He was fouled and connected on the back end of two freebies to make it 61-58 with 1:17 to play.
Jackson State was unable to inbound the ball, and Glynn made the turnover hurt, sinking a layup to make it 61-60 with 54 seconds left. Johnson was fouled on the ensuing Tiger possession, setting up the game's final plays.
In addition to his clutch basket, Glynn finished with three rebounds and a steal. Tims came off the bench for six points on 2-for-3 shooting and grabbed four rebounds. Harris joined Williams with three assists, and Scott pulled down five boards to go with his 13 points.
Saturday's meeting was the first of two showdowns between SFA and Jackson State this season. The two will get together again on Dec. 1 in Jackson, Miss. In the meantime, the Lumberjacks will host Texas Tech on Tuesday in a 7 p.m. game, then entertain Huston-Tillotson on Nov. 28.
