CHICAGO, Ill. - The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack football team debuts at 19th on the season's first College Sporting News Gridiron Power Index (GPI) announced Ralph Wallace Tuesday afternoon. The Lumberjacks (3-1) are riding a three-game win streak, and have been consistently climbing the charts.
SFA cracked the FCSnow.com Top 25 poll last week, and maintained their 24th ranking in the latest poll, while they appear just outside the FCS Coaches and Sports Network Top 25 polls. The Lumberjacks will take their GPI rank into the Southland Conference opener Saturday against No. 7 (Sports Network) McNeese State (3-1). The game will be the Southland Conference opener for both teams. The Cowboys are also coming off a bye week, but unlike the 'Jacks who are riding a three-game win streak, McNeese State had a three-game streak snapped at Tulane Sept. 26th.
The game will pit two of the nation's best offenses against one another. SFA leads the nation in pass, scoring and total offense, while McNeese State enters the game with the nation's fourth-best rushing and total offense, and the country's third ranked scoring offense.
Saturday's game will serve as the annual Take a Kid to the Game. All children ages 14 years and younger will receive free admission to the game. Along with the free admission children will also receive free popcorn, $1 hot dogs and the SFA Spirit Squads will also be on hand to paint faces prior to kickoff.
