NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Ladyjacks got standout performances from both Roxana Enica and Alina Shazkho, but the Houston Cougars depth got the better of SFA as the Cougars pulled out a 5-2 win Saturday at the Schlief Tennis Complex.
Enica and Shazkho won both of their singles matches as well as teaming up for SFA's lone doubles win, but the rest of the Ladyjacks failed to win a set as SFA finished off it's season-opening weekend with a split after Friday's win over Louisiana Tech.
The duo was pushed in doubles competition, but moved to 2-0 as a tandem after battling out an 8-6 win over Houston's top pair of Lucy Forward and Vicky Simpson. Gaby Gadeva and Tatiana Smolnikova fell to 1-1 on the year after dropping their match 8-4 to Lynley Wasson and Joanna Kacprzyk, while Mary Harrison and Sanjana Kapur fell 8-5 to Jordan McCombs and Laura Ring, giving the Cougars the doubles point.
Enica and Shazkho, though, gave the Ladyjacks hope in singles play, though, picking up points in both of their matches. Enica dropped the first set of her No. 1 singles match to Forward, but rallied to pick up the win in three sets, 4-6, 7-6, 10-8.
Shazkho did not need quite as much time, however, disposing of Lynley Wasson 6-3, 6-4 in No. 2 singles.
SFA gets a week off before hitting the hardcourt again, traveling to Denton to take on regionally-ranked North Texas on Feb. 7. The next home match for the Ladyjacks will be Feb. 9 against Louisiana-Monroe.
