NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Ladyjack tennis team opened up the 2009 spring season on the right foot on Friday, picking up a 6-1 win over Louisiana Tech at the Schlief Tennis Complex.
The win is the third consecutive win for SFA (1-0) over Louisiana Tech (0-1) dating back to 2006.
SFA cruised to a pair of 8-1 wins in earning the doubles point, with the duo of Roxana Enica and Alina Shazkho picking up where they left off in the fall season with a win over the Lady Techster's No. 1 duo of Rocio Juarez and Maartje de Wit. Gabriela Gadeva and Tatiana Smolnikova closed out the point by winning No. 2 doubles in the same fashion over Mallory Smith and Laura Rodriguez.
Louisiana Tech was forced to forfeit the final doubles match after only fielding five athletes for the match.
With the Lady Techsters already down a point after doubles play, they were forced to give up another point in singles play for their shorthanded handicap, and the Ladyjacks quickly took advantage.
SFA's top four players did not lose a single set in singles play in securing the win, starting at the top with Enica.
She earned a 6-1, 6-2 win over Ada Makowska in No.1 singles, while Shazkho also cruised to a straight-set win over de Wit in the No. 2 slot, 6-1, 6-0. Sanjana Kapur did not have much trouble either at No. 3 singles, getting past Juarez 6-4, 6-2. Gadeva got by in straight sets too, 6-2, 6-0 in No. 4 singles over Rodriguez.
Mary Harrison nearly finished off a sweep for the Ladyjacks, coming back to force a tie-breaking set in No. 5 singles before falling 10-6 to Mallory Smith in the tie-breaking third set.
SFA is right back in action on Saturday with a 2:00 p.m. start time at home against Houston.
