'Jacks Fifth at Mean Green Classic

DENTON, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack golf team kicked off the 2008-09 season Monday afternoon at the Cobb-Ferrell Mean Green Classic in Denton, Texas. The 'Jacks shot an opening-round three-over par 291, followed by a second-round 10-over 298 to finish the day with a 13-over 589 on the par 72 Lantana Country Club Course. SFA enters the final round of action fifth in the 12-team field.
"I thought we did well today," said head coach Trey Schroeder. "We had some mental mistakes, but it's the first tournament of the season. In previous years we have been very young and inexperienced, but the good thing about this team is that we go five deep."
Junior Josh Irving led the way recording a two-over par 146. He is tied for 14th heading into the final round of action. Irving was the 'Jacks lone player to record an under-par round on the day.
Sophomore Kyle Robbins is only one stroke off Irving's pace with three-over par, 147. Robbins is currently tied for 20th overall. Classmate Michael Smith recorded consecutive rounds of 74 to finish the day with a four-over 148. He is currently tied for 24th overall.
Senior Chad Spencer is currently fourth for the Lumberjacks. He is 38th overall after shooting a 77-75 - 152. Junior Matt Oates opened the day with a one-over 73, but struggled in the second round with a nine-over par 81. He enters the final day of competition with tied for 44th overall with a 154.
The 'Jacks will close out the final round of the Cobb-Ferrell Mean Green Classic Tuesday morning. Play is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m.
