FRISCO, Texas - Sophomore linebacker Jabara Williams, and sophomore return specialist Vincent Pervis have been named Southland Conference Players of the Week announced league officials Monday afternoon. Williams received defensive honors, while Pervis garnered special teams recognition.
A 6-3, 215-pound Garrison, native, Williams recorded a career night against No. 20 South Dakota State. Williams led all players with a career-high 19 tackles. He was credited with 2.5 tackles for 11 yards in losses, and 1.5 sacks. Williams also recorded the first two interceptions of his career, including one in the end zone to thwart a second-half SDSU drive. Not only did he stop a touchdown, Williams also blocked a Jackrabbit field goal just prior to halftime.
Pervis provided the SFA fans with a highlight they haven't seen in eight seasons. After South Dakota State took its first lead of the game in the second half, Pervis responded by taking the ensuing kickoff 94 yards for a touchdown. It marked the first Lumberjack kickoff return for a score since the 2000 season. Pervis averaged 38.3 yards per return on four returns.
The Lumberjacks return to action Saturday when they host Southeastern Louisiana. The game against the Lions is slated to begin at 6 p.m. from Homer Bryce Stadium.
