OMAHA, Neb. - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack soccer team went to halftime Friday night locked in a scoreless tie at Creighton. SFA held a 7-6 advantage in first-half shots and a 4-3 edge in corner kicks in the opening period. But Creighton packed the ball into the SFA back third in the second half, earning eight corner kicks. Two of those eight opportunities resulted in goals, as the Bluejays took a 2-0 win.
The loss drops SFA to 2-4-0 on the season and keeps the Ladyjacks winless on the road this season. Creighton improves to 6-3-0 while picking up the program's 200th victory.
The Ladyjacks opened the match aggressively, earning three corner kicks within the first 15 minutes. Two of those corners eventually led to shots on goal -- the first by junior Megan Cash at the 5:35 mark and the second off the foot of senior Amanda Lackey. But SFA would not register another shot on goal in the opening period and mustered just one more shot in the half following Lackey's attempt in the 18th minute.
Creighton fared no better at the other end of the field, as SFA goalkeeper Courtney Bauder rebuked both Bluejay shots on goal in the first half.
Creighton opened the second period as the aggressor, earning two corner kicks in the first three minutes of the half. SFA fended off these first two attempts, but the third one paid off when Shawn Magrum found the net with an assist coming off a corner kick by Lindsay Vaught. The goal gave Creighton the lead in the 55th minute.
The Bluejays would add to their advantage just seven minutes later. Bauder registered a save on a Creighton shot attempt in the 55th minute. But, starting at the 59:07 mark, Creighton would get three consecutive corner kicks in a matter of less than two minutes. The third one, off the foot of Mary Zapapas, found Marcy Gans for the second Bluejay goal of the night, setting the final score.
The Ladyjacks tried to answer, firing off three shots -- two on goal -- in the next five minutes. Later, a header attempt by senior Jessica Cotton was saved by the Creighton 'keeper, and junior Brenna Crockett hit the crossbar with a shot in the 76th minute, but SFA couldn't find the net.
For the game, Creighton outshot the Ladyjacks, 17-14, with a 7-5 edge in shots on goal. The Bluejays finished with 11 corner kick attempts to SFA's five.
Bauder (2-3-0) finished with five saves in 90 minutes of action.
The Ladyjacks will head to Lincoln, Neb., Sunday to take on Nebraska. The game against the Cornhuskers is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. Nebraska (3-4-1) is coming off a 3-0 win over North Dakota State on Friday. The Cornhuskers played Drake to a scoreless tie on Tuesday.
