DENTON, Texas - The SFA volleyball team cruised to a 3-0 (25-16, 25-16, 27-25) win over UT-Pan American on Friday in the opening match of the Spike Ike Classic on the campus of the University of North Texas, a tournament with each team having had its schedule revamped due to the effects of Hurricane Ike.
Debbie Humphreys watched on as her Ladyjacks (6-3) were never behind or tied in either of the fist two sets, holding the Broncs (3-6) to .060 hitting in the first to sets. She also used to the match to get some looks at some new players as transfer Paloma Buckner and freshman Sydney Ellis saw significant playing time in the final two sets.
Ellis responded with five kills and two aces in the second set, while Buckner added six assists from her setter spot. However, it was the regular culprits that led the way for SFA in seniors Lauren Railey and Shelly Swendig who had 12 and eight kills apiece, respectively. MC Bottled continues to provide a steady hand in the middle, hitting .667 with nine kills on 12 attacks with a pair of blocks in the morning match.
UTPA made things interesting in the final set and threatened on several occasions to claim the set, but never made it all the way to a set point opportunity before Marcia Logan misfired on consecutive attacks to give SFA the win.
The Ladyjacks will play the final match of the Friday session against Big 12 opponent Texas Tech at 7:00 p.m. The match can be followed at www.meangreensports.com via Livestats by clicking on the tournament link on the right sidebar of the home page.
