DENTON, Texas - Debbie Humphreys has picked up 471 wins in her career, but Friday's had to have just a sweeter taste to it as the Ladyjacks picked up a 3-1 (25-17, 25-16, 23-25, 25-18) win over her alma mater, Texas Tech, in their second match of the Spike Ike Classic at the Mean Green Volleyball Center.
The win was the first of Humphreys' coaching career against the Red Raiders (4-8) in three tries and was the first win for the Ladyjacks' (7-4) over a Big 12 opponent since SFA knocked off Iowa State in 2005.
SFA only trailed at one point during the entire match, when the Red Raiders overcame a five-point deficit to pull out their lone win in the second set, but the Ladyjacks hit at .364 and .409 clips in the first two sets to sprint out to a quick 2-0 lead that that Texas Tech couldn't overcome.
Kelsey Owens picked up the start in the evening match and led six players with at least five kills on the night with 10 kills of her own.
The Ladyjacks held a significant advantage in serves and in blocks, landing eight aces with only six errors while the Red Raiders only dropped in two aces with 14 service errors. SFA also rejected 12 shots on the night versus the Texas Tech front line that only threw back six.
SFA will now put its four-match win streak on the line Saturday morning with a 10:00 a.m. match against Louisiana-Lafayette. The Ladyjacks swept the Ragin' Cajuns on Sept. 9 and are 10-0 all-time against ULL. The Cajuns fell in their first match of the tournament 3-1 to Texas Tech before sweeping UT-Pan American in their evening match.
