NACOGDOCHES - After a couple of days of cooler temperatures, the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack football team returned to the practice field Thursday morning under the heat of the East Texas sun. The practice was highlighted by the SFA signal callers who consistently hit their targets down the field.
"Our first couple of workouts have been very spirited," said SFA head coach J.C. Harper. "Coach (Dan) Eason has done a great job in the weight room with the guys who stuck around over the summer."
As a unit, the quarterbacks connected on 17-of-24 (71 percent) passes, with only one interception. Sophomore Jeremy Moses was 12-of-16 (75 percent), including a stretch of seven-straight, and nine of his first 10. Freshman Neil Warden was also a perfect 3-of-3.
The Lumberjack defense did not spent the workout playing the role of victim. Junior defensive back Cory Barlow has looked strong in the early days of practice, and that didn't change Thursday. Barlow, who picked off two passes Wednesday, broke up two more passes today. Junior defensive linemen Andre Hicks, and Kendall Jernigan also combined to drop Moses for an eight-yard loss.
"Before Cory got hurt we felt he was on his way to a great year," Harper said. "It has taken Cory a year to get back, but his confidence has returned and you can see that on the field. We believe he is going to have two very good years for us."
The 'Jacks will spend the rest of the day in meetings before stepping on the field Friday at 8 a.m. The Friday morning workout will be the team's last one before the team's first two-a-day Saturday. The Lumberjacks will take to the field at 8 a.m., and then return that evening for a 7 p.m. workout.
Quick Hits: The annual `Meet the 'Jacks' is slated for Thursday, Aug. 21, in the Baker Pattillo Student Center Grand Ballroom. Tickets for the event are $10, and can be purchased from any Fredonia Rotary Club member.
The Lumberjacks kickoff the 2008 season Saturday, Aug. 30, against Langston. The game against the Lions is slated to begin at 6 p.m. from Homer Bryce Stadium.
