HOUSTON, Texas - An unfortunate bounce led to the only goal of the game as Stephen F. Austin suffered a 1-0 loss at Houston Sunday afternoon. The Cougars got on the board with a long goal in the 21st minute and held on to collect the win and move to 2-1-0. The Ladyjacks fall to 1-2-0 on the season.
SFA opened strong, as Janae Lee recorded a shot on goal in the game's opening minute, following a Ladyjack corner kick. But Houston moved the action to the other end of the field and earned a corner kick of its own. SFA turned back that threat, but a Ladyjack foul in the 20th minute set up a free kick near midfield for Stephanie Derieg.
With the wind at her back, Derieg sent the ball into open space in front of the Ladyjack goal. SFA goalkeeper Courtney Bauder came out to play the carom, but it bounced just over her reach and found the back of the net to put Houston ahead, 1-0.
The Ladyjacks tried to respond quickly with Amanda Lackey posting a shot on goal in the 24th minute, but SFA couldn't convert on the chance.
The Ladyjacks held Houston to seven shots with just one on goal in the second period but were unable to tie the score. Edwina Forbes fired a shot on goal in the 58th minute, and SFA spent much of the game's final 15 minutes knocking at the door in the Cougar half of the field, but couldn't find enough of an opening to score.
For the game, Houston finished with a 14-9 advantage in shots and a 4-3 edge in shots on goal. Bauder recorded three saves in 90 minutes of action.
The Ladyjacks will be back in action Friday, when they take on Louisiana Tech on the road.
