NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Sophomore quarterback Jeremy Moses completed 27-of-41 passes for 280 yards and six touchdowns, and rushed for another score, as Stephen F. Austin defeated Langston 56-19 Saturday night at Homer Bryce Stadium. The victory, which is the first career win for head coach J.C. Harper, ended an 11-game losing skid for the `Jacks.
"It was big for us, to start off the year this way after the work we put in during the off season," said Harper. "That's what we work on every day in practice, and have ever since Coach (Shannon) Dawson has gotten here. We want to get up to the line quickly, get the ball snapped and get it to our playmakers. It's like a two-minute drill every time we have the ball."
SFA wasted no time jumping on the scoreboard when Moses finished off a 12-play, 70-yard drive, with a three-yard touchdown pass to junior Contrevious Parks on the team's opening drive. The TD grab was the first of Parks' career.
The visitors from Langston kept the game close trailing by only a point, 14-13, with 11:16 remaining in the second quarter. But after a blocked extra point, SFA stole the momentum rattling off 42 unanswered points. The Lions didn't see pay dirt again until 12:38 remaining in the fourth.
The 56-points are the most points by a Lumberjack squad since SFA scored 63 against Western Illinois in 2005. The 42 points SFA scored at halftime were the most since recording a similar halftime tally against Southern Utah during the 2002 season.
Moses connected with 10 different receivers including senior Tyrell Williams who caught seven passes for 89 yards and a touchdown. Junior transfer Duane Brooks hauled in five passes for 97 yards and a touchdown.
The Lumberjack defense picked up the intensity in the second half. After surrendering 13 points in the opening 30 minutes of play, SFA allowed Langston only one score in the second half. Freshman linebacker Brandon Brown led the `Jacks with nine tackles, including one for a loss. Junior Tim Knicky posted six stops and two of the team's three sacks.
The Lions were hurt by penalties throughout the contest. They were penalized 22 times for 172 yards, while SFA was flagged six times for 55 yards.
Texas A&M transfer Cornell Tarrant picked up the `Jacks other rushing touchdown. He finished the game with seven carries for 20 yards.
SFA will look to make it two in a row to start the 2008 season Saturday, Sept. 6, when they travel to Fort Worth, Texas, to take on TCU. The game against the Horned Frogs is slated to begin at 6 p.m.
