NACOGDOCHES - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack basketball team signed Courtney Conwright to a National Letter of Intent head coach Lee Ann Riley announced Wednesday afternoon. Conwright's signing gives the Ladyjacks three athletes in the current recruiting class that can come in and handle the basketball.
"We are thrilled that Courtney is going to continue her career as a Ladyjack," said Riley. "A great competitor, she has the ability to be a lock down defender and knock down the winning shot. Courtney is a tough, hard-nosed player, who has had to fight through injuries the past two seasons and was still able to guide her team to successful runs in the playoffs."
A former district newcomer of the year, Conwright averaged 13.3 points, and 2.1 steals per game on her way to first-team all-district honors. Conwright was the district's second leading scorer, and second in the district in three-pointers, during her junior season, while guiding Timberview to a 31-5 (.861) overall record.
"Courtney made an immediate impact on our program at Timberview," said Timberview High School head coach Candi Harvey. "Her passion for the game and for competition, is as strong as any player I have coached. She loves the defensive end of the floor and that trickles down to the rest of her teammates, which is a coach's dream. Anytime one of your best offensive players gets after it on the defensive end the way Courtney does, it definitely elevates the level of intensity from everyone else.
"Offensively, Courtney always wants the ball in her hands in pressure situations. I cannot tell you how many games she has either won or sent into overtime because of her confidence in her ability to knock down the big shot. Courtney's intangibles are what sets her apart and will make her a very successful Ladyack."
Conwright was twice named Dallas Morning News Player of the Week, and entered her junior season among the publication's players to watch list. She finished her sophomore campaign third in the district in scoring and three-point shots.
Conwright's final two prep seasons were slowed by injuries, but the 5-4 point guard still garnered national attention. She was invited to compete in the Addidas Top 10 Underclassmen Camp, and the Texas A&M All-Star camp.
The four-year letterwinner also found quite a bit of success at the club level as well. Conwright guided the Texas Express to back-to-back-to-back AAU national titles from 2002 - 2004.
Conwright's success is not only limited to the hardwood. She has also been named to the District 4-5A All-Academic team.
