SAN ANTONIO, Texas - After pounding out 12 hits for nine runs in a 9-0 win in the opener of their three-game series at UTSA, the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks were shut out in back-to-back games, losing the rubber match of the series, 1-0, Sunday to trade places with the Roadrunners in the Southland Conference standings.
SFA came into the series finale on Sunday with a half-game lead on UTSA for second place in the league. Following the one-run loss, though, the Roadrunners have edged ahead of the Ladyjacks slightly in percentage points with an 18-9 SLC record. SFA is now 32-20 on the season and 17-9 in Southland games.
The Ladyjacks put just five runners on base Sunday with two hits and a trio of walks. UTSA didn't fare much better, mustering only five hits, but the Roadrunners strung two of their hits together and capitalized on an SFA error in the second to score the game's only run.
Ladyjack starter Monika Covington didn't allow a baserunner in the first inning and retired the first two batters of the second, before UTSA's Rudi Cantu doubled to right-center to give the Roadrunners their first runner. Cantu scored when the next batter reached on a fielding error.
SFA got a bunt single from Monica Hirsch in the fifth and a lead-off single by Kendal Harper to open the sixth, but couldn't get a run across.
Covington (17-10) finished with one unearned run on five hits and three strikeouts.
The Ladyjacks will next play on Tuesday, when they travel to Waco, Texas, for a non-conference game against Baylor. The contest was rained out on its original date earlier this season. SFA will wrap up the regular season this weekend with a three-game home series against Northwestern State.
