WACO, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin softball team had its opportunities early but couldn't find the scoreboard Tuesday in a 3-0 non-conference loss at Baylor. The Ladyjacks move to 32-21 with the defeat, heading into the last weekend of the regular season.
Tuesday, the Ladyjacks squandered four hits in the first two innings and left the bases full in the top of the second. Senior Jessica Tullos led off the inning with a single down the left field line and moved to second on a passed ball. She took third on a base rap to center by freshman Ashley Struchtemeyer, but would advance no further. Junior Kim Daley drew a walk one out later to load the bases, but Baylor got out of the inning on a pop foul.
The Bears went quietly in the first and second before putting up a run each in the third and fourth innings. They scored on four hits in the third, then used a double and a bunt single to push a run across in the fourth.
Baylor used a pair of singles and two stolen bases to put runners on second and third with one out in the fifth, after chasing starter Debra Boles from the circle in favor of Kari Hugie to begin the inning. Baylor scratched on a sacrifice fly to set the final score before Hugie was able to strand a runner at third.
Meanwhile, after putting together five base knocks in the first three innings, the Ladyjacks had just one hit over the final four innings. Struchtemeyer and junior Kendal Harper each went 2-for-3 in the game.
Boles took the loss and moved to 1-2 on the season. She allowed two earned runs on seven hits and a walk through four innings. Hugie gave up a run on two hits with a pair of strikeouts in two innings of relief work.
The Ladyjacks will finish off the regular season this weekend when they host Northwestern State in a three-game Southland Conference series. SFA enters the weekend third in the SLC with a 17-9 record. SFA is just a half-game behind UTSA in the standings with the chance to move into second, earning first- and second-round byes in the league's postseason tournament.
