NACOGDOCHES - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack basketball team filled a huge need with the signing of prep point guard Cambria Smith SFA head coach Lee Ann Riley announced Friday morning. Smith's signing fills a huge need on the Ladyjack roster with three-time All-SLC selection Nikki Carr out of eligibility.
"We are excited about the addition of Cambria Smith to our program," said Riley. "Cami is a smart and crafty player who really understands how to play the game. A true team player, Cami thinks pass first, shoot second, and is always looking to set up her teammates. After leading the DFW in assists the past two seasons, we look forward to her adding those talents to our team."
A three-time first-team all-district selection, Smith led the Dallas-Fort Worth area in assists the past two seasons on her way to being named 2008 district MVP. Smith is a southpaw who averaged 8.3 points, and 6.1 assists per game this past season, and was named a North Texas Basketball Coaches' all-star, and an alternate on the TGCA all-star team.
"We are very excited that Cami will be attending SFA," said North Mesquite head coach Paul Gardner. "She is such a great student-athlete, and we hope that she will contribute just as much as a Ladyjack, as she did as a Lady Stallion."
A former Dallas Morning News player of the week selection, Smith has proven herself a success on the court and in the classroom. Smith leaves North Mesquite as a three-time first-team Academic All-District selection.
"I am very excited about attending SFA," said Smith. "I am looking forward to playing for Coach Riley and her staff. I've met with the (players) and I can't wait to be a part of the team. I love the campus and the resources that the school offers student-athletes."
Smith brings the Ladyjack signing class to four, joining Tammara Marion, Schera Sampson and Amina Sawyer who signed in November.
