NACOGDOCHES - The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack football team will take its first steps toward the 2008 season Monday when it steps on the field to open spring practice. The 'Jacks open practice with a 3:40 p.m. workout Monday on the SFA practice fields at Homer Bryce Stadium. The workout will be the first of 14 scheduled workouts for the Lumberjacks.
SFA will hold three scrimmages during the spring schedule culminating in the Annual Spring Game Saturday, April 19th. The annual scrimmage will begin at 6 p.m. from Homer Bryce Stadium and is free to the public. The dates of the other two scrimmages are Saturday, April 5 (9 a.m.) and Friday, April 11 (6 p.m.).
The 'Jacks have five scheduled workouts in their first week of spring camp. They will be back on the field Tuesday at 3:40 p.m., and will take Wednesday off before returning to the field for two more practices before Saturday's scrimmage.
The 2008 Lumberjacks are going to be one of the youngest teams in country as they enter the season with only a handful of seniors. With the addition of transfer Cameron Schacht SFA enters 2008 with only six seniors on the roster. The other seniors are wide receiver Dominique Edison, kicker Cory Long, linebeckers Brian Ford and Jonathan Patke and defensive lineman Efrain Sanchez.
Along with a signing class that included 29 new names to the Lumberjack roster, Harper also added Shannon Dawson, David Gibbs, Kris Kocurek and Eric Lokey to the coaching staff. Dawson will coach the SFA quarterbacks, and take over as the 'Jacks' new offensive coordinator. Former Lumberjack All-American David Gibbs will coach the SFA defensive backs, and serve as the new defensive coordinator. Kocurek will coach the 'Jacks' defensive line, while another former SFA All-American, Lokey, will coach the linebackers.
