OXFORD, Miss. - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack softball team wrapped up a hard-luck weekend at the Ole Miss Red and Blue Classic Sunday with a 1-0 loss to Belmont. In all, the Ladyjacks dropped five games in the tournament, but by a total of just six runs. SFA lost four one-run decisions.
Sunday, Belmont used a four of its five hits in the third inning to push across the game's only run. SFA pitcher Monika Covington allowed just one hit the rest of the way, but the Ladyjacks could muster just three base knocks of their own in getting shut out for the second time in the tournament.
Covington (7-4) was charged with one earned run on five hits and no walks through seven innings. She recorded six strikeouts.
But the Belmont pitcher struck out 14 of the 26 batters she faced and allowed only three Ladyjacks to reach base in the game. Briana Bishop drew a walk, and Monica Hirsch went 2-for-3. The only other SFA player with a base knock, Candise Juarez, tripled to lead off the bottom of the seventh, but was stranded by two strikeouts and a groundout.
The loss moves SFA to 11-9 on the season. The Ladyjacks will return to action Wednesday, when they host North Texas in a doubleheader. The first game is set to start at 4 p.m.
