FRISCO, Texas - - Stephen F. Austin junior defensive end Tim Knicky and senior kicker Cory Long have been named to the 2008 Academic All-Southland Conference team announced league officials Monday morning. It marks the third time in Long's career, and the second time in Knicky's career that two have received academic all-conference recognition.
The honor comes only days after the athletes garnered national recognition for their accomplishments on the field and in the classroom. Knicky was named Associated Press Third-Team All-America last week, while Long was named to the FCA ADA Academic All-Star team for the second time in his career.
One of the most dominant defensive linemen in the SLC, Knicky finished fifth in the country, and tops in the conference with 12 sacks. He also led the league, and finished ninth in the nation with 20 tackles for a loss. The heart-and-soul of the Lumberjacks' defensive effort, Knicky ended the season with 74 total tackles, including 40 solo stops. He was also credited with four pass breakups, five forced fumbles, and one fumble recovery.
Knicky earned honorable mention all-conference honors after his freshman and sophomore seasons. He entered the 2008 campaign as a preseason second-team all-conference selection before earning first-team honors at the end of the year. He will enter his senior season with 164 tackles, 44 tackles for loss and 20 sacks in 28 career starts.
A semifinalist for the 2008 Draddy Award, Long wrapped up his best season in a Lumberjack uniform in 2008. Long finished ninth in the Southland Conference in scoring, averaging 6.5 points per game. He finished the year with a career-high 78 points after connecting on a league-best 51-of-51 PATs, and 9-of-13 (.692) field goal attempts. His mark of 69.2 percent on field goal attempts was among the league's top six.
Long leaves SFA as one of the school's all-time leading scorers. He graduates third on the school's all-time scoring list with 232 career points.
