NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack football team has released its 2009 schedule announced SFA Director of Athletics Robert Hill Saturday afternoon. The 11-game schedule includes five home dates.
"I think this is a very competitive schedule and one that we can have some success with despite only five home games," said Hill. "The game at SMU will be great for our program and fans. We should receive a week's worth of publicity in the Dallas market leading up to the game, and that's something that we don't receive very often there."
The Lumberjacks open the 2009 season on the road Saturday, Sept. 5, against SMU. The game against the Mustangs will be SFA's lone contest against an NCAA Division I FBS opponent. The Lumberjacks will return home the following weekend for the home opener against Texas College.
SFA will once again be heading to Macomb, Ill., to take on Western Illinois. The game against the Leathernecks is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 19th. The 'Jacks' final non-conference tilt will be the following Saturday, when SFA hosts North Dakota at Homer Bryce Stadium. The game against the Fighting Sioux will also serve as Parents' Weekend.
The Lumberjacks will then take a week off before facing McNeese State in the Southland Conference opener. The game against the Cowboys will be one of only three conference home dates during the 2009 calendar. SFA will play host to Sam Houston State in the annual Battle of the Piney Woods Saturday, Oct. 24th. The game against the Bearkats will also serve as the Lumberjacks' homecoming game. SFA's final conference home game will be Saturday, Nov. 7, against Nicholls State. The 'Jacks' will also have conference road dates against Central Arkansas (Oct. 17), Texas State (Oct. 31), Southeastern Louisiana (Nov. 14) and Northwestern State (Nov. 21).
All SFA home games will kickoff at 6 p.m. from Homer Bryce Stadium, except for the homecoming game against Sam Houston State. The game against the Bearkats is slated for a 2 p.m. kickoff.
