FRISCO, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack football team placed eight players on the 2008 All-Southland Conference team, including three first-team selections, announced league officials Tuesday morning. Senior receiver Dominique Edison, junior defensive end Tim Knicky and sophomore linebacker Jabara Williams each garnered first-team recognition. It is the first such honor for all three players.
In addition to the three first-team selections, SFA also received one of the league's superlative honors. Transfer Duane Brooks was named SLC Newcomer of the Year.
Edison became one of the nation's top receivers in 2008, setting a school and conference record by hauling in 18 touchdown passes, which was nation's second-best mark in 2008. He also finished second in SLC history with 28 career TD receptions. Edison ended the season second in the league, and ninth nationally in scoring (9.2 ppg). Edison leaves SFA as the school's all-time leader in receptions, and is second all-time in touchdown catches and receiving yards.
Williams and Knicky were two of the most dominant players in the Southland Conference this past season. Williams led the SLC with 132 total tackles, and finished ninth in the nation averaging 11 tackles per game.
Knicky received all-conference recognition for the third consecutive year. A preseason second-team All-SLC pick, Knicky finished sixth on the team with 74 tackles, and fifth in nation in sacks (12) and tackles for a loss (20).
Brooks made an immediate impact on the Lumberjack offense. The speedy receiver led the Southland Conference, and finished among the nation's leaders with 68 receptions. Brooks ended the year recording 863 receiving yards, and four touchdown receptions, despite missing two games early in the season due to injury.
The Lumberjacks had five athletes earn honorable mention all-conference honors. Record-setting quarterback Jeremy Moses was joined by receiver Contrevious Parks, offensive linemen Karl Glimp and Cameron Schacht, and freshman punter Drew Nelson on the honorable mention list.
The 'Jacks' all-conference selections highlight the youthful talent on the SFA roster. The Lumberjacks will enter the 2009 campaign returning all but two of their all-conference selections.
