NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin men's and women's track and field team has scheduled its annual purple and white scrimmage for Thursday, Nov. 20 through Saturday, Nov. 22nd. The three-day event will take place at Fletcher Garner Track in Homer Bryce Stadium.
SFA head coach Phil Olson enters his 10th year at the helm of the men's and women's program. Both the men's and women's teams should be strong in 2009 with numerous talented athletes returning from last year's team. The SFA men and women will have numerous athletes competing for individual title honors during the indoor and outdoor season.
The Ladyjacks return two of the top throwers in the league in juniors Frednisha Marshall and Kaitlyn Andrews, while senior Kelsea David is back to defend her indoor pole vault title. SFA should also be strong in the multi events again this season with the return of 2008 SLC heptathlete champion Ebbonye Johnson, and 2008 runner-up Tabitha Riley. Add to that mix the young talent from the SFA cross country team, and the Ladyjacks should be a formidable opponent this season.
The 'Jacks also return a very strong cast led by senior Keith Mahipala, juniors Josh Cruse, Aaron Harlan and Matt Langdon. Mahipala will lead an always strong Lumberjack harriers' squad, while Cruse will look to get back to the top of the league in the triple jump after an injury-plagued sophomore season. Harlan and Langdon both proved to be two of the top athletes in the region. Langdon is the conference defending weight throw champion, while Harlan finished second in the SLC in the decathlon and advanced to the NCAA Championships.
The field events get under way Thursday with the men's and women's weight throw (2 p.m.). The track events are slated to begin Friday at 2:30 p.m. with the running of the men's and women's 800 meters.
