NACOGDOCHES, Texas -Thursday afternoon we set off for Conway, Arkansas to play our conference home opener against the Sugar Bears of Central Arkansas. We stopped about halfway in Texarkana and ate at Bryce's Cafeteria, which was almost as good as Luby's. I could even slurp my mashed potatoes down with a straw, yum! It was good to be amongst a crowd of such a youthful population, but we were forced to travel onward. On the bus, we watched everyone's favorite movie, Best In Show and played a game where we learned a little too much about each other. We arrived in Conway around 9:30pm.
Friday morning we were able to sleep in a little, getting up only to eat from the smorgasbord of items at what I like to call the "Stupid 8" breakfast buffet. Our match was at 7pm, so needless to say, we had a little time to kill. We had some study hall time until around noon, and I am sure everyone took full advantage of that opportunity.
From the hotel we went on a small shopping excursion in town. I do not really remember anything too exciting happening, but I was very tempted to buy a children's spider Halloween costume, but decided that I could probably find something better. After that, we ate at Ruby Tuesday's, where some of us ate to the point of misery. We still had a bit of extra time on our hands, so we went back to the Super 8, Spanish for no high-speed internet, and "prepared" for Central Arkansas.
Finally, at around 4pm, it was time to head to the gym to play a little ball. The game started promptly at 7pm, in a gym that was filled with loud fans and even a mangy dog with a mohawk. They had a pretty sweet introduction for their team complete with a strobe light, and glow sticks and necklaces in the dark. For once I am not being sarcastic- I was slightly jealous. We started off slow in game one, and ended up losing by a few points. The next three games, however, were a different story, and we won in four. After the match, we found a few rogue glow things and probably had way too much fun with them.
Saturday was a rarity: we had the day off. Most of us ended up going to the Lumberjack football thriller at Homer Bryce Stadium, and then we had more fun with our glow sticks. Monday was yet another rarity in the world of volleyball, as we had a match against Northwestern State which was rescheduled due to media relations issues.
So on Monday we left for our sister city, Natchitoches, slightly after high noon. We ate at Trail Boss, and it was pretty good as usual. We also met a lady who knows a girl named Casey who plays in the SFA band. At first she thought we were a rowing team, and then bull riders. I guess we could be. Heck, I would join a rowing team if we had one. After that fun at the restaurant, some of us ran over to Goodwill for some thrift shopping. Like always, there were some pretty sweet things there. I found some killer pants with a lace-up front and a button pouch in the back- you know, like the onesy pajamas where you can just open the flap to go to the bathroom. Ray and I decided that they were probably marching band pants, but whatever they were, they looked pretty good on me, I must say.
After that fun, we set off for the gym. It was not the usual place of play, but instead some sort of rec center type thing that had showers made for tall people. We had fun in the locker room prior to warm-up, predicting the game plan and drawing a "dispose of the Demons" picture. Like the game against UCA, we started a little slow, but this time, we ended up winning the first game. The next two games were not so close, and we won in three. But apparently, many of us, on occasion, according to their lone heckler, "let the whole team down." We left the gym and went to Wendy's, where most of us enjoyed a victory Frosty, and then we headed back to Nacogdoches, two games into conference play, with two wins under our belt.
This weekend we only have one match, and it is on Saturday at 2pm at HOME against McNeese! Please come out and support us as we try to make it 3-0 in conference play!
Word of the Week: Churlish - adj. rude in a mean-spirited and surly way. Ex. The heckler at Northwestern State spoke at us in a churlish way when we would make a mistake.
