SFA Looks to Tame Lady Lions

NACOGDOCHES - Fresh off a Southland Conference opening 68-64 victory over Nicholls State Thursday, the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks (4-9/1-0 SLC) return to action Saturday to host Southeastern Louisiana. The Lady Lions enter tonight's game 7-7 (.500) on the season and 1-0 in conference play after defeating Sam Houston State, 87-60, Thursday night. The win Thursday put an end to a two-game skid for Southeastern Louisiana, while the Ladyjacks ended a four-game slide. The game against the Lady Lions is slated to tip off at 6 p.m.
Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack head coach Lee Ann Riley is 108-83 (.565) in her seventh season in Nacogdoches. She is 239-141 (.629) in 13 seasons as a head coach. Lori Davis Jones is 65-87 (.428) in her sixth season at Southeastern Louisiana. She is 243-184 (.569) in her 14th season as a head coach.
The Ladyjacks are 19-2 (.904) all-time against Southeastern Louisiana, and have won the past two meetings in the series. The Ladyjacks won the first 17 games of the series before the Lady Lions swept the 2004-05 season series. Saturday's game marks the first meeting in Nacogdoches between the two teams since the 2005-06 season with SFA recorded an 83-48 victory.
The Ladyjacks struggled from the floor in the opening half against Nicholls State, missing their first eight shots of the game and shooting only 7-of-31 (.226) heading into the locker room. But the Ladyjacks followed up one of their worst shooting performances of the season with their best. SFA shot lights out in the second half connecting on 18-of-29 (62.1 percent) shots.
Freshman Jordan Ford appears to be getting stronger as the season wears on. One of the top freshmen in the league, Ford has been one of the team's top scorers and rebounders over the course of the past six games. During that stretch, Ford is averaging 10.8 points and 5.7 rebounds, including a team-high 18-point, nine-rebound outing in the victory over Nicholls State.
Freshman Chantol Drennan, who has been hampered by injuries to start her SFA career, is slowly returning to form. Thursday night the 6-1, Bedford product scored a career-high 11 points and pulled down a career-high eight rebounds in the team's four-point victory. All 11 of her points, and seven of her eight rebounds came in the second half, helping SFA rally for the victory.
