NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack soccer team will open its 2007 campaign this weekend with a pair of home matches against St. Edward's and Creighton. Both schools are first-time opponents for the SFA soccer team. This marks just the second time in the program's 12-year history for the team to open the season with consecutive home matches. The last time it happened was 2004, when SFA defeated Arkansas State at home before falling to Oral Roberts in the second game. The action begins Friday night with a 7 p.m. tilt against St. Edward's. Sunday's game against Creighton is set for an 11 a.m. start.
Last Week: The Ladyjacks wrapped up their two-game exhibition slate on Wednesday with a 0-0 tie against TCU. The scoreless gridlock marked the second straight all-zeroes showing for the squad. SFA also played Centenary to a scoreless tie in the first exhibition game of the season.
SFA vs. the Hilltoppers: Friday's game will mark the first-ever meeting between SFA and St. Edward's. St. Edward's is an NCAA Division II school in Austin, Texas. The Hilltoppers went 17-3-2 last season.
SFA vs. the Bluejays: When the Ladyjacks square off with Creighton Sunday morning, it will mark the first meeting between the two schools. Creighton, a Missouri Valley Conference squad, is coming off a 9-8-2 season. The Bluejays went 3-2-1 in conference play.
The Coaches: Jaime Frias is in his third year as head coach of the Ladyjack soccer team. He carries a career record of 23-12-1 (.653), including a 12-2-1 (.833) mark against Southland Conference foes. St. Edward's is coached by Nick Cowell. The second-year coach has a 17-3-2 record at the school and a career mark of 233-90-23 in 18 seasons. Creighton head coach Bruce Erickson is 81-68-16 in eight seasons with the Bluejays and 150-114-22 overall in 14 years of coaching.
Next Week: The Ladyjacks will play their first road games of the season against a couple of big in-state foes. SFA will travel to Lubbock, Texas, for a 7:30 p.m. game against Texas Tech on Friday, Sept. 7. Sunday, the Ladyjacks will head to Houston to take on Rice in a 1 p.m. contest.
