NACOGDOCHES - Approximately 90 athletes reported back to campus Friday morning to begin preparations for the 2007 season. The upcoming slate will mark a era in Lumberjack history as the coaching reigns have been handed over to former defensive coordinator J.C. Harper. The 'Jacks will spend the rest of the day in meetings, and will hit the turf for their first official workout Saturday.
Among the returnees, Harper welcomed back to campus five preseason all-conference selections including quarterback Danny Southall, running back Louie Runnels, linebacker Damian Perkins and offensive linemen Taylor Cobb and Brock Pasteur. Perkins has also garnered national attention during the offseason being named Lindy's Magazine 2007 FCS Preseason Second-Team All-America.
A lot of excitement surrounds the 2007 SFA squad, which returns 41 letterwinners from a year ago. The 'Jacks received two first-place votes and were picked to finish second in the Southland Conference according to a preseason poll of the league head coaches.
Saturday's workout will be the first of 29 scheduled practices before SFA opens the season at home Saturday, Sept. 1 against Tarleton State. SFA faces a daunting slate this season with only five home dates, and playing non-conference games at North Dakota State and South Dakota State. SFA will close out the home portion of the 2007 schedule with back-to-back games against preseason favorite McNeese State and Sam Houston State.
