SFA Places Seven on Preseason All-SLC Squad

HOUSTON, Texas - Seven Lumberjacks, including five first-team selections, were named to the 2007 Preseason All-Southland Conference teams announced league officials Tuesday morning at the SLC Kickoff Celebration in Houston, Texas. Seniors Taylor Cobb, Brock Pasteur, Louie Runnels and Danny Southall and junior Damian Perkins garnered first-team recognition, while junior Dominique Edison and sophomore Leonard Lynce were placed on the second team.
Southall returns for his second season as the starting signal caller, and is coming off an impressive junior campaign. The 6-3, 214, Hitchcock, Texas native led the SLC averaging 170.6 pass yards per game and 208.6 total yards of offense last season. Southall finished the year completing 58 percent of his passes for 1,877 yards and eight touchdowns. He also carried the ball 109 times for 418 yards and six more scores.
Southall is joined in the backfield by 6-0, 250-pound running back, Louie Runnels. Runnels finished fourth in the league averaging 64.5 yards per game, and was among the league leaders averaging 4.9 yards per carry. Runnels had a career-night at Southeastern Louisiana when he carried the ball 22 times for a career-high 205 yards, which tied for the eighth best single-game mark in school history.
Cobb and Pasteur will lead one of the more veteran offensive lines in the program's recent history. Between the two athletes, they recorded 21 starts last season. Both Cobb and Pasteur wrapped up their junior campaigns by earning second-team all-conference honors, while blocking for a first-team selection at quarterback and running back.
Perkins is the Jacks' lone representative on the defensive side of the ball. After opening his freshman season as the team's starting tailback, Perkins switched to the defensive side of the ball where he had a mammoth impact. Perkins earned second-team All-SLC honors in 2006 after leading the league in tackles with 92. He was also among the league leaders with 11.5 tackles for losses. He was the SLC Defensive Player of the Week and named I-AA Weekly All-Star for his performance at Arizona where was involved in 23 tackles and intercepted a pass.
Edison is a second-team preseason selection after earning honorable mention all-conference honors a year ago. A 6-3, 200-pound, target from San Augustine, Texas, Edison finished the season second on the team with 30 catches for 543 yards and five touchdowns.
Lynce was placed in a tough position in 2006, filling the shoes of injured first-team All-SLC fullback Michael Motte. Lynce did an admirable job, coming out of the backfield to haul in 10 passes for 122 yards. He finished the 2006 campaign earning second-team All-SLC honors.
The Lumberjacks kick off the 2007 season Saturday, Sept 1, when they host Tarleton State. The game against the Texans will be one of only five home games on the 2007 slate.
