NACOGDOCHES - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack basketball team signed 5-6 point guard Ebony Alexander to a national letter of intent announced SFA head coach Lee Ann Riley Wednesday afternoon. The addition of Alexander fills a need for SFA who will be losing point guard/off guard Nikki Carr, who is out of eligibility following the 2007-08 season.
"We are extremely excited to be adding a player of Ebony's caliber to our program," said Riley. "She is a very smart and savvy point guard with the ability to take over a game with her scoring, passing, and defense."
Alexander recorded an explosive junior season leading her team in every statistical category. She was named team MVP and Desert Sky League MVP averaging 24.1 points, 7.4 rebounds, 6.7 assists and 3.6 steals.
Following her junior season, Alexander transferred from the state of California to play for Hillcrest High School and head coach Deidra Rucker. Alexander didn't have to shoulder a majority of the scoring load at Hillcrest as she joined a lineup that included another NCAA Division I player.
Despite the amount of talented scorers on the Hillcrest squad, Alexander still put up impressive numbers during her senior season. She finished the year averaging 13.7 points, an area-best 8.8 assists, 5.2 rebounds and 3.6 steals. She helped guide Hillcrest to a bi-district, area and regional quarterfinal championship. Following the season, the honors came rolling in as Alexander was named team MVP, newcomer of the year, first-team all-district, first-team all-region and received McDonald's All-America consideration.
"Ebony is an outstanding athlete and student," said Rucker. "I think SFA is a great fit for her and close to home. I can't wait to see her play at the next level. I believe in what the coaches at SFA are doing and I know they will make sure she is successful academically."
"I am really excited about playing for Coach Riley and being a part of the great tradition that has been established at SFA," said Alexander. "I am a very competitive player and I love to play basketball. I am ready to make some big plays, unbelievable passes, and put another championship banner up."
