Leah Matthews Qualifies for Nationals

NACOGDOCHES - The Stephen F. Austin men's and women's track and field team competed at the NCAA Regional Championships Friday in Des Moines, Iowa. SFA recorded a couple strong performances which included a national qualifier and a school record.
Senior Leah Matthews has advanced to the NCAA Championships for the first time in her career. Matthews recorded a school-record jump of 20-8.00 to finish second overall. Classmate Darwin Johnson recorded a personal and school record in the discus. Johnson finished eighth overall with his throw of 180-5 in the event.
Other SFA athletes that competed on Friday included senior Audrey Azu and junior Meghan Denman in the high jump. Azu finished 19th overall clearing a height of 5-7.25. Denman struggled Friday unable to clear an opening height.
Junior Katrina Roundtree represented the Ladyjacks in the women's 400-meter dash. Roundtree finished 17th overall with her time of 58.16. Juniors Geoffrey Carey and Chayden Feist competed in the pole vault for SFA, but finished the competition without a mark.
SFA returns to action for the second and final day of the NCAA Midwest Regional Championships. Saturday's events begin at 1 p.m. with the men's javelin throw and the men's triple jump. Saturday's track events are slated to get started at 3 p.m. with the finals of the men's and women's 4 X 100-meter relay.
