
Lumberjack Baseball Hosts Houston

NACOGDOCHES - The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjack baseball team will return to Jaycees Field Tuesday for a midweek game against the University of Houston Cougars. The Lumberjacks head into Tuesday's game with an 18-16 overall record while the Cougars hold a 17-14 overall mark. The game is scheduled for a 3 p.m. start.
SFA is coming off a 1-2 weekend at Northwestern State. The win came on Friday when the Lumberjacks rallied from a 7-1 deficit to score 12 runs off 15 hits in the final three innings to take a 13-8 win. The win was sandwiched between a 6-2 loss Thursday and an 8-7 loss Saturday.
Steven Hill is leading the 'Jacks with a .382 batting average. He has 12 home runs on the year, just two less than his 2006 season total. His 46 RBI and nine stolen bases also lead the team. Hill is tied with Noel Trevino for the team lead with 11 doubles and 35 runs scored. Trevino is second on the team with a .350 batting average.
Lance Luetge will make his ninth start of the season Tuesday. In 47.0 innings of work, he has giving up 33 runs off 57 hits and 18 walks. The southpaw has 32 strikeouts on the year. Luetge has a 4-2 record and a 4.40 ERA.
Houston has won six of its last eight games, including its last two. The Cougars went 2-2 last week, losing its first two games, a 12-6 loss at Baylor and a 10-5 loss at home against UAB. But the Cougars ended the weekend with 10-4 and 10-3 wins over UAB.
Jimmy Cesario is leading the Cougars with a .364 batting average. In 121 at-bats, he has 44 hits and 23 RBI. He's also scored 25 runs this season. Josh Stirneman leads the team together with Dustin Kingsbury with 28 RBI apiece. Stirneman is batting .333 while Kingsbury has a .280 average.
Donnie Joseph will be making the start for the Cougars. He has started six games and has made 11 appearances for 30.1 innings of work. The lefty has a 7.42 ERA and has struck out 17 while walking nine. He has yet to record a decision.
The Lumberjacks faced Houston earlier in the season, with the Cougars taking a 15-6 win in their season opener. Last season, the teams split their home-and-home series with SFA's win coming at home.
This season, SFA is 12-2 at Jaycees Field and the Cougars are 4-5 on the road.
After Tuesday's game, the Lumberjacks will once again hit the road as they travel to Corpus Christi, Texas, to face Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Friday through Sunday. The games will be played from Fairgrounds Field in Robstown, Texas, at 6:30 p.m. Friday, 3 p.m. Saturday, and 1 p.m. Sunday.
