SFA Track & Field has Busy Day at Texas Relays

AUSTIN, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin men's and women's track and field team had a busy third day of competition at the Texas Relays Friday in Austin. After only having two athletes compete during the first two days of the meet, SFA had 12 athletes and two relays competing Friday.
Junior Wade Whittington got SFA out to a great start in the men's javelin. Whittington recorded an NCAA Regional mark and finished sixth overall with his throw of 206-11. The Lumberjacks also recorded top-10 finishes in the men's 1,500 meters and the steeplechase. Senior Chance Edwards finished eighth overall in the 1,500 meters with a time of 3:51.27. Teammate Keith Mahipala recorded a sixth-place finishes for the `Jacks in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with his time of 9:10.34.
SFA also had quite a few athletes that just missed top-10 finishes. Junior Markeshia Edwards finished 11th in the shot put with her throw of 46-2.75. Freshman Kaitlyn Andrews was only three places back of Edwards with her throw of 45-3.00. Senior Katrina Nicholas game the Ladyjacks a strong showing in a talent-packed women's 3,000-meter steeplechase. Nicholas finished 12th overall with her time of 11:15.53. The Ladyjacks high-jump duo of Meghan Denman and Audrey Azu cleared a height of 5-7.00 Friday afternoon to finish 12th and 13th respectively. Transfer Sumbo Adeniran recorded a 15th-place finish in the men's long jump with his mark of 22-7.00, while junior Darwin Johnson finished 16th overall in the discus with his throw of 167-4.
Other SFA athletes that competed on Friday included Leah Matthews and Silent-Joy Egboba-Waye in the 100-meter hurdles. Matthews recorded a time of 14.94, while Egboba-Waye finished with a time of 14.87. Junior Johnny Thacker recorded a time of 10.91 in the 100-meter dash. The Lumberjacks' 4 x 100-meter team recorded a time of 41.22 in the preliminaries, while the `Jacks 4 x 400-meter relay team posted a preliminary time of 3:13.42.
SFA had two athletes compete Thursday afternoon. Zach Ross and Travis Beavers both competed in the men's 400-meter hurdles. Ross recorded a time of 53.60 in the preliminaries, while Beavers clocked a 53.96.
