NACOGDOCHES - Noel Trevino hit a game-winning single in the bottom of the 11th inning to give the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks a 6-5 win over the Texas-San Antonio Roadrunners. The Lumberjacks move their overall record to 22-19 and improve to 9-8 in Southland Conference action as UTSA falls to 24-16 and 14-3 in SLC play.
The Lumberjacks had an early 1-0 lead, scoring in the bottom of the first. SFA was able to hold on to the lead until the top of the third when UTSA scored three runs for the 3-1 lead. The Roadrunners extended their lead to 5-2 by adding a run in each the fourth and fifth innings.
In the bottom of the fifth, Jeff Brewer led off with a walk and moved to second when Kevin Croft singled to shortstop. Zach Gardner then laid down a bunt to load the bases. Noel Trevino then put a single through the left side to pull the score to 5-2. Croft, who has moved to third on Trevino's single, shortened UTSA's lead to 5-3 when Steven Hill hit a sac fly to center field.
While SFA pitchers held the Roadrunners at bay for the next three innings, the Lumberjacks were able to put together their second two-run rally in the bottom of the eighth to tie the score at five. It all started when Hill led off with his second double of the day down the left field line. With one out, Hill moved to third when Kevin Crabtree singled to first base. After a UTSA pitching change and a Lumberjack strike out, Chris Smith doubled down the left field line to send Hill and Crabtree across the plate for the 5-5 knot.
After sending the game into extra frames for the second straight game, both teams got three straight outs in the 10th inning to send it to the 11th. In the top of the 11th, UTSA was able to get a runner up to third base, but a two-out ground out ended the Roadrunners scoring opportunity.
In the bottom of the 11th frame and with one out, Kevin Croft singled up the middle. Croft moved over to second on a single from Gardner put through the left side. Trevino then sent in the winning run on a single down the left field line to give the Lumberjacks a 6-5 run over the league-leading Roadrunners.
Trevino's game-winning single was only his second hit of the game, as he went 2-for-6 with two RBI. Croft had three hits in four at-bats and scored two runs. Crabtree, Hill, and Gardner also pitched in with two hits apiece.
On the mound, Richard Folmer collected his second win of the season to move his record to 2-2. In three innings pitched, he gave up three hits and struck out two as he held the Roadrunners scoreless.
The Lumberjacks will face UTSA Sunday at 1 p.m. from Jaycees Field.
