NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Kurt Attaway's 3-pointer with 1:35 left gave Texas-San Antonio a 49-46 lead, the Roadrunners' first since the 15-minute mark, and UTSA held on for a 54-49 win over Stephen F. Austin Saturday in the William R. Johnson Coliseum. The loss in the regular-season finale drops SFA to 15-13 on the season and 8-8 in Southland Conference play.
The Lumberjacks shot 50 percent in the first half and knocked down 60 percent from 3-point range, led by a 3-for-4 effort by sophomore forward Josh Alexander. But Alexander picked up two fouls before the half and was charged with his third and fourth early in the second period, forcing SFA coach Danny Kaspar to pull him from the lineup. Alexander would foul out with seven minutes left in the game, just minutes after returning to floor. Without their leading scorer in the lineup, the Lumberjacks struggled to find some offense.
Keith Hardaway was the lone SFA player to reach double figures. He finished with 10 points on 4-of-9 shooting, including a pair of big 3-pointers in the second half. His second trey followed Attaway's and tied the game at 49 with 1:14 left. But the Roadrunners answered with a three by Isaiah Allen, and SFA failed to score down the stretch.
For the game, SFA shot 44.4 percent from the floor to UTSA's 42.9 percent. The Lumberjacks beat the Roadrunners on the boards, 29-24, but shot just 44 percent from the free throw line, while UTSA connected on 17 of its 23 foul shots.
The Lumberjacks are set to open play in the O'Reilly Auto Parts Southland Conference Tournament Thursday, at the Campbell Center in Houston, Texas. Seeding for the tournament will be announced Sunday.
