
SFA Strong First Day in Home Meet

NACOGDOCHES - Senior Chance Edwards closed out the first day of the Dogwood Invitational Friday evening with a school record performance in the men's 5,000 meters. Edwards won the race clocking a time of 14:29.32. Of the 12 events held on the first day, SFA brought home four individual titles.
Freshman Josh Cruse recorded the 'Jacks first victory of the day, winning the triple jump with a mark of 46-9.50. Junior Markeshia Edwards recorded a throw of 164-9 in the hammer throw to take the individual title. SFA's other individual title came from Keith Mahipala in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Mahipala recorded a personal best time of 9:13.45, which was just six seconds shy of a regional qualifying mark.
Senior Katrina Nicholas also recorded a strong steeplechase time. Nicholas finished third in the women's steeplechase crossing the finish line with a personal record time of 11:05.35. Nicholas' time was only 10 seconds off the SFA record.
Other SFA athletes with strong finishes Friday were Aaron Hohn in the steeplechase, Cole Hollingsworth in the men's 1,500 meters and Marc Farris in the 5,000 meters. Hohn finished second in his event with a time of 9:34.02. Hollingsworth (3:56.51) and Marc Farris (14:47.36) also recorded second-place finishes.
The SFA men and women return to action Saturday in the second and final day of competition in the Dogwood Invitational. The field events will begin at 11 a.m. with the high jump, long jump and javelin. The track events get under way at 1 p.m. with the women's 4 x 100-meter relay.
