NACOGDOCHES - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack basketball team traveled to Carbondale, Ill., Wednesday morning to prepare for its WNIT opening round game against the Southern Illinois. SFA is slated to tip off against the Salukis Thursday at 7:05 p.m. from SIU Arena. The Ladyjacks (21-11) are the 2007 SLC runners-up, while SIU (20-10) won the Missouri Valley regular-season title.
If the Ladyjacks get past Southern Illinois, they will travel to Manhattan, Kansas, to face Kansas State. The second-round game against KSU has been scheduled for Saturday at 7 p.m. from Bramlage Coliseum announced school officials Wednesday afternoon.
The Wildcats enter postseason play with a 16-14 overall record, but have lost six consecutive games, and 10 of their last 12. Southern Illinois enter its conference tournament having won eight consecutive games before dropping a 12-point decision to NCAA tournament-bound Drake in their opening-round game of the MVC Championships.
The Ladyjacks are making their second consecutive trip to postseason play. Last year, SFA won the SLC regular-season and tournament titles to receive the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Championships where it faced Arizona State. SFA is making its second overall appearance, and its first since the 1986-87 season, in the WNIT. The Ladyjacks are 2-1 all-time in the WNIT.
