NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Red and Blue Classic: The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack softball team will resume play this weekend when it takes part in the Ole Miss Red and Blue Classic, a six-team tournament in Oxford, Miss. SFA (3-12) will kick off the tournament with a pair of games Friday. The Ladyjacks will meet Ole Miss at 9 a.m., then play Coastal Carolina at 11. On Saturday, SFA will open with Kennesaw State at 1 p.m., then play Southern Miss in a 3 p.m. game. The Ladyjacks will wrap up tournament play Sunday with a game against Alcorn State, scheduled to start at noon.
Last Time Out: The Ladyjacks led No. 16 Baylor in both games of their doubleheader Tuesday night, but wound up losing each contest. The Bears took a 7-1 win in Game 1 and knocked off SFA, 6-2, in the nightcap. The Ladyjacks scored a run in the first inning of Game 1, and took a 2-0 lead in Game 2, but each time saw Baylor rally back with runs of its own in the bottom half then shut SFA out the rest of the way. Sophomore Sydney Davis earned her fourth and fifth straight starts at shortstop for the Ladyjacks. She led the team at the plate, going 2-for-6 with an RBI. Davis' .318 average is now second on the team.
The Opponents: Tournament host Ole Miss brings a 4-12 record into the weekend. The Rebels are coming off a 2-0 shutout loss against Mississippi Valley State on Tuesday. As a team, Ole Miss is batting .252 and has been outscored, 62-44, by the opposition. All four of the Rebels' wins have come at home. Coastal Carolina is 3-10 going into the weekend. The Chanticleers are coming off consecutive losses and have dropped four of their last five games. Kennesaw State holds the best record of any of the teams in the tournament at 15-4. The Owls have won four straight and seven of their last eight games. Kennesaw State is batting just .294 as a team, but the Owls' 2.35 team ERA has kept opponents in check. Southern Miss has compiled a 4-10 record this year. The Golden Eagles opened their season by losing four of five, including two losses to SFA, at the Bayloer Getterman Classic. Southern Miss has dropped three games in a row, heading into the Red and Blue Classic. Information on Alcorn State was not readily available.
The Coaches: SFA is coached by Jenifer Wells. Wells is in her second season at SFA, where she holds a 23-40 (.365) record. In her five-year collegiate coaching career, Wells is 159-148 (.518). Ole Miss is coached by Missy Dickerson. Coastal Carolina is under the direction of Jess Dannelly. Kennesaw State is coached by Scott Whitlock. Southern Miss is coached by Gay McNutt.
