WESTMONT, Ill. - Three Lumberjacks were recognized on the Don Hansen's Football Gazette All-South Region team announced Thursday afternoon. Three-time All-America safety Keldrick Holman garnered first-team recognition, while juniors Danny Southall and Louie Runnels were second-team selections.
Holman's stellar play on the field helped SFA become arguably the best defense in the Southland Conference this past season. The 'Jacks led the league in scoring defense, rush defense and total defense in conference games during the 2006 campaign. Holman finished the year fourth in the league in tackles, third in interceptions and eighth in passes defended. The Lumberjacks finished tied for second in the conference posting a 4-2 league record.
The 2006 season marked Southall's first year to start under center for the Lumberjacks. Southall came into the year as a preseason first-team all-conference selection, and he lived up to the billing. Southall led the league in passing yards (170.6 ypg) and total offense (208.6 ypg). A dual-threat quarterback, Southall finished 10th in SLC carrying the ball 109 times for 418 yards. He was responsible for 14 touchdowns on the season, including six rushing scores.
Runnels really came on toward the latter stages of the 2006 season. Runnels carried the ball 145 times for 709 yards and six scores during the season, which was among the league leaders. He put forth a career-effort at Southeastern Louisiana, where he torched the Lions for 205 yards on 22 carries. Along with Southall, Runnels wrapped up the 2006 season by earning first-team all-conference honors.
