LUBBOCK - With a 2-0 lead going into the eighth inning, the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks gave up a run but were able to hold on and edge the Texas Tech Red Raiders, 2-1, for their first win of the season Saturday afternoon at Dan Law Field in Lubbock. The win evens up the `Jacks' record at 1-1.
SFA jumped on the scoreboard after David Jeans led off the top of the third with a single through the left side. After advancing to second on a Justin Roland sacrifice bunt, Jeans scored after Justin Long knocked a single into left field. Jared Pitts scored the `Jacks' second run of the afternoon when he hit a home run to center field.
In the bottom of the eighth, after two SFA errors and the bases loaded, Tech's lone scorer was walked across the plate. In the Red Raiders' final at-bat, with the bases loaded, `Jacks' reliever Erik Gregersen was able to get the batter to ground out to shortstop Jeff Brewer for the 6-4 put out at second base to seal the win.
For SFA, starter Jared Schrom pitched three innings giving up three hits and striking out three while only walking one.
The Lumberjacks will head to Houston Tuesday to face the Cougars at 2 p.m. from Cougar Field.
