
Lumberjacks Defeat Penguins, 8-1

NACOGDOCHES - Jared Pitts hit a two-run home run as part of a five-run fifth inning as the Stephen F. Lumberjacks defeated the Youngstown State Penguins 8-1 Friday afternoon from Jaycees Field. SFA is now 4-8 on the year has won two of its last three while YSU is 0-1 this season.
In the bottom of the fifth with one out, Kevin Croft reached safely after hitting a base hit to center field. Croft then advanced to second when Jeff Brewer laid down a bunt and avoided the tag to put runners on first and second. Then Penguins starter Lucas Engle walked Kevin Crabtree to load the bases. Croft scored and the runners advanced a base when Noel Trevino hit a sacrifice fly to center field. First baseman Steven Hill then hit a bases clearing double to left field to make the score 3-0. After Hill stole third base, Jared Pitts hit a two-run home run - his fourth of the season - to put the Lumberjacks up by five.
Each team added a run in the seventh inning, with SFA's run coming on an RBI single hit by Jeremy Arterburn.
After hitting a one-out double in the eighth, Croft scored his second run of the game on a sacrifice fly hit by Kevin Crabtree. Trevino sent Brewer across the plate on a left center field double for the eventual final score of 8-1.
Three different Lumberjacks had two hits apiece with Brewer going 2-for-4 with two runs scored from the leadoff spot. Pitts also had two hits, as did Croft. Pitts' two hits extended his hitting streak to seven games. Trevino, Hill and Pitts also had two RBI each.
Lumberjack starter Lance Luetge pitched in his longest outing of the season, going 7 inings. He gave up four hits, one run, and struck out six.
SFA and YSU will return to the diamond Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. at Jaycees Field.
