TULSA, Okla. - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack softball team saw its losing streak extended to six games Friday, as it dropped each of its first two contests in the Holiday Inn Select Tulsa Festival. SFA (3-8) was shut out by Missouri State in the first game, 7-0, and dropped the second contest against Eastern Illinois, 6-4.
SFA was held to three hits in the shutout loss against Missouri State. The Bears scored five runs in the first two innings to take charge early, then tacked on two more in the sixth. Kari Hugie started for SFA and was tagged with the loss after giving up five earned runs through five innings. Magen Butler pitched the last two innings and was charged with two runs.
SFA jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning of Game 2. Leadoff batter Benet Higgs tripled to right field, then scored on a single by Jessica Tullos. Crystal Dahlquist, who had walked, moved to third on the hit. Sydney Davis walked to load the bases, and, after a strikeout and a fielder's choice, Bria Wilson drew a walk to force home Tullos for a two-out RBI.
Eastern Illinois answered quickly with two runs in the bottom of the second, then added two more in the fourth. SFA tied the game at four in the sixth, when Briana Bishop blasted a two-out, two-run homer to center field. But Eastern Illinois used two hits and a Ladyjack error to plate two runs in its half of the sixth, setting the final score.
Ashley Wilburn started and pitched five complete innings for SFA. She was charged with one run in the sixth and wound up with the loss. Wilburn allowed five runs but only two earned, thanks to three SFA errors in the game. Hugie relieved Wilburn and was charged with one run on one hit in one inning of work.
Higgs went 3-for-4 with a run scored in the second game, making her 4-of-8 on the day. Tullos was 2-for-5 against Eastern Illinois. Heather Hebert recorded one hit in each game.
The Ladyjacks will resume tournament action Saturday, when they take on Creighton at 4:30 p.m., then play host team Tulsa at 7.
