TULSA, Oklahoma - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack softball team suffered a pair of losses Saturday in the Holiday Inn Select Tulsa Festival. SFA fell to Creighton, 4-1, then lost in a run-rule shortened game against Tulsa, 9-1. The sweep dropped SFA's record to 3-10 on the year and extended the Ladyjacks' losing streak to eight games.
After scoring a run in the second inning on a Briana Bishop home run -- her second of the tournament -- the Ladyjack bats fell silent. SFA mustered just two hits the rest of the way. Meanwhile Creighton tied the score with a single run in the bottom of the second, went ahead with another run in the third then tacked on a pair of insurance scores in the fifth. SFA finished with three errors.
Sophomore Kari Hugie started and pitched six innings in taking the loss. Two of her four runs were earned. She allowed seven hits and two walks and struck out one.
In the nightcap, Tulsa worked SFA starter Ashley Wilburn for 12 hits and nine earned runs in four-and-two-thirds innings of work. The Golden Hurricane scored two runs each in the second and third innings, then put together a four-hit rally in the fourth that produced four more runs, putting Tulsa ahead, 8-0.
Wilburn tried to help her own cause with a solo homer to center in the Ladyjack fifth, but Tulsa answered with two hits and a run in the bottom half to end the game.
Benet Higgs went 2-for-3 to lead SFA at the plate against Tulsa. Magen Butler added a hit in the second game, giving her two for the day. Sydney Davis and Hugie each posted hits in the first game.
The Ladyjacks will be back in action on Tuesday, Feb. 27, when they play a doubleheader at Baylor. The first game is set for a 5 p.m. start in Waco, Texas.
